BRINGING HIS SPIRIT HOME tells the remarkable WWI story of Private Arthur Thomas Walker, a Ramindjeri man of the Ngarrindjeri nation, who fought in Gallipoli and lost his life in France.

Before Private Walker left to fight in a war that was ‘illegal’ for him to fight in, he named his son ‘Anzac’, born on the day of the infamous allied landing at Gallipoli and the campaign in which his father would soon serve. Four sons across three subsequent generations also bear that name. The podcast explores the  ANZAC legend – and spirit – through the lense of First Nations service.

WHEN THE WAR COMES HOME tells the powerful story of the Beachport Mine Tragedy, one of Australia’s least-known yet most significant stories of WWII.

It took place on the 14th of July 1941 in the small coastal town of Beachport, South Australia.

The accident took the lives of two young Royal Australian Navy sailors: Able Seaman Thomas Todd and Able Seaman William Danswan. They were the first two casualties killed on Australian soil due to enemy action in World War II.

BATTLE ON 42ND STREET is a video podcast made for the Shrine of Remembrance about Australian soldiers in WWII. It was produced by Megan Spencer.

The “Battle on 42nd Street” was a notorious bayonet charge fought on the island of Crete between ANZAC soldiers and members of the German 5th Alpine Division, during Nazi occupation of the island in WWII. Stopping the advancing German troops in their tracks, it was a brief yet defining moment for the Australian and New Zealand soldiers, which changed the face of that war, forever.

Hear Professor Peter Monteath, historian and author in conversation with Megan Spencer, creator of  podcast From A Whisper To A Bang! –  whose own grandfather took part in the battle – as they discuss in-depth this remarkable battle in Crete, the most modern and ancient of wars.

IMPACT OF SERVICE is a three-part oral history project made for the Virtual War Memorial Australia by ‘podcaster-in-residence’, Megan Spencer.

Megan spoke with WWII veteran and former Army medic, Corporal Lawrence McEwen in his 100th year about his time serving in the New Guinea campaign during the war with Japan; former Army physiotherapist, Lieutenant Dianne Skewes (now Fairhead) about her time as the first physiotherapist – and female physiotherapist – deployed with the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam war; and to Captain Michael von Berg MC OAM, about his experience as an Australian Army officer during the Vietnam War, between 1966-1967. Each interview focuses on the ‘impact of service’ before, during and after deployment.

DEEP STORYTELLING is a podcast that was made as part of two-day educational workshop, ‘Deep Storytelling: Creating A Culture Of Connection’. It was recorded and produced by Megan Spencer.

Co-presented by “the Megans” (Megan Davis and Megan Spencer), the workshop was held on July 18-19, 2015, at Impact Hub Berlin, Germany.

The aim of the workshop was to teach people to create more meaningful and memorable stories. Ten participants took part. In the podcast they share deep insights about themselves and their work that they discover through conducting an interview with another person.

The results are surprising, moving and powerful.
